Abstract of the study: The invasive Campylopus introflexus (Hedw.) Brid. and the indigenous C.pilifer Brid. grow in mixed-stands in a French Nature Reserve. We took advantage to this situation to better understand the mechanisms of biological invasion concerning bryophytes species. For this purpose, we studied the ecological niches, the reproductive strategies, and the potential hybridization of both species. We provided the evidence that they have a distinct ecological niche in the study site. Indeed, C. pilifer needs less soil depth than C. introflexus. The Campylopus species also contrast in their reproductive strategies. C. pilifer performs an effective vegetative multiplication and doesn’t reproduce sexually while C. introflexus invests massively in sexual reproduction and is also able to spread vegetatively. The study of the sex distribution across the sites showed spatial sex separation of C. pilifer individuals. At a microhabitat scale, individuals of both species show complex combinations of both sexes, allowing pure of potential crossed fecundations. Two sporophytes attached to C. pilifer in the vicinity of male C. introflexus (and the apparent total absence of male C. pilifer) lead us to believe at a potential hybridization between the two species occur.
