Bio
Yahia Lababidi
Martin Cohen is an uncommon type of thinker, rigorous while still remaining accessible. His generous love of knowledge is manifest in his enthusiasm to share it, not only with other trained thinkers (such as in The Philosopher journal, where he is editor) but also with the thoughtful general reader, as evidenced in any of his many popular philosophy books.

One of the important tasks in this modest role, is picking out from a worldwide circle of writers, thinkers and yes, philosophers too, is original ideas, and new philosophical research. Sometimes such pieces come in very carefully crafted to be suitable for our readership, but most often they are unwieldy things, perhaps struggling with English as a second lanaguage. It is my job, essentially, to help writers to communicate their insights. In the process, we often engage in a thought-provoking and invariably good-natured philosophical exchange.

A few years back I wrote "Philosophy for Dummies' but now I'm working on a follow-up blockbuster!'Critical Thinking Skills for Dummies'. Now it's really on the final stage, and out (we hope) Spring 2015. Should be fabulous! Writing well dodgy press releases to save the Dales!Notable successes? * Obtaining the cancellation of the Ilkley bypass - one of very few projects to be stopped at such a late stage - involving my leading a research project on the 'traffic implications' of the bypass, and liaising not only with 'greens' but wider community interests too.* The humiliating climb-down (and the resignation of the CEO) of Yorkshire Water after the company conducted a disastrous challenge to our advert criticising Yorkshire Water's use of 'Climate Change' to explain the disastrous shortages of water in the region in 1995. probably the only time Friends of the Earth has won an argument with the Advertising Standards Authority, and it was much resented by Head Office - who were arguing then that Yorkshire really had to get used to having no rain as Climate Change cut in!

Supply Teacher

Jan 1993 - May 1994
Supply Teacher, Bradford Metropolitan Council. Mainly Upper Junior and Middle school age ranges teaching esp. English. What an experience that was! I wrote a bit about in the 'Philosophical Notes' series in the Independent. The lack of hope or enthusiasm for the children was rather shocking. I remember teachers suggesting I spend less time with children having difficulties: "Their parents are all peasents", they explained. Supply Teacher, Bradford Metropolitan Council. Research Assistant
-
Jan 1991 - Sep 1992
Research Assistant at Leeds University under George MacDonald Ross for a national report into new and innovative teaching methods for Philosophy. My role included looking into the possible role of computers and writing sections for the final written report. Well, that was years ago, but what I learned was really how stuck-in-the-mud and irrelevant academic philosophy is. The experience did however have the positive side of inspiring me to produce the new kinds of interdisciplinary and active materials and methods that the project recommended - but fund so few 'paid-up philosophers' prepared to try.
