With origins in the results obtained partially from research performed during my master, we will attempt to clarify mechanism(s) behind extracellular concentrations of divalent cations, and myotonic contractions, possibly through effect on the voltage gated sodium ion channel.Utilizing patch clamp technique, we will measure the effect of varying extracellular concentrations of divalent cations on the channel. In addition our results from patch clamp will be used to optimize a mathematical model of skeletal muscle fibers, to allow for more exact representation in the model. Working in a Reasearch group centered around Muscle tissue ion channels and biological systems:My research project is aiming to determine the nature of Warm-Up phenomena in the muscle disease; Myotonia Congenita empolying both electrophysiology and computed simulationThe Described phenomena occurs in many myotonias and is of interest both at a basic scientific and clinical level, since it's mechanism may provide a novel insight to possible treatments to improve both the clinical myotonia, and possibly muscle performance in general.
