Reinventing Daily Life was atemporary Master’s programme at the Sandberg Instituut. It examined the connections between the performing arts and daily life, between people and art, between society and the artist. Students embarked on a quest for a new balance between supply and demand, searching for pressing questions and issues that people are struggling with, and finding a connection between the autonomous power of the artist and the community they produce their work for. We worked as a collective, but there was a great deal of focus on the personal creative process as well. Guest tutors, mostly from the fields of theatre, music and philosophy, propose assignments that were inspired by experiences from their practice. Each program included many joint and solo presentations in an organised communal space – always outside, in the real world. Reinventing Daily Life welcomed performers, composers, theatre and film designers, philosophers, journalists, writers, poets, fine artists and designers and all others who feel they have something to contribute to the subject. Key questions within the programme were: Is it possible to preserve the creative and alternative power of the performing arts, while answering to the demanding powers in society? Can performing arts take on an applied art form, delivering functional products? To what degree can artists work autonomously when answering external questions? Do performing arts need a shared framework to optimally communicate with an audience?
