Elawa Farm is a public-private partnership dedicated to the preservation and stewardship of a unique combination of natural setting, designed landscapes and buildings of architectural and historic significance. In 1998, the City of Lake Forest acquired a 16-acre parcel of land, including the original farm complex buildings that were part of an early 20th century gentleman’s farm, known as ELAWA FARM. Adjacent to ecologically significant Middlefork Savanna, this purchase created an opportunity for a unique partnership of public and private organizations to collaborate in the preservation and use of this property. Our mission: Elawa Farm, a restored gentleman’s farm and garden, enriches our community as a unique center for hands-on learning and inspires an appreciation for gardening, healthy living and historic preservation.

The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition consists of more than 125 environmental, conservation, and outdoor recreation organizations; zoos, aquariums, and museums. Our member organizations represent millions of people who share a common goal: restoring and protecting North America’s greatest freshwater resources, the Great Lakes. The Coalition maintains an active presence in Washington, D.C., to educate federal public officials about the importance of Great Lakes restoration through events like Great Lakes Days. The Coalition is also active in the Great Lakes states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, by supporting our federal advocacy work as well as restoration projects on the ground through our grant program. Activists from D.C. and the region come together for our annual Great Lakes Restoration Conference, held each fall. The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition’s mission is to secure a sustainable Great Lakes restoration plan and the federal funding needed to implement it. The Coalition seeks to: stop sewage contamination that closes beaches and harms recreational opportunities; clean up toxic sediments that threaten the health of people and wildlife; prevent polluted runoff from cities and farms that harm water quality and lead to toxic algal blooms; restore and protect wetlands and wildlife habitat that filter pollutants, provide a home for fish and wildlife, and support the region’s outdoor recreation economy; prevent the introduction of invasive species, such as Asian carp, that threaten the economy and quality of life for millions of people.

The Alliance works to conserve and restore the world's largest freshwater resource through policy, education and local efforts aimed at preserving the Great Lakes region as a national treasure. It also works with the region's residents, enhancing their understanding of how they can help, too. To that end, we draw on many resources, working with teachers, scientists, economists, legal specialists, government representatives, communities and individuals. And, year-by-year, individual-by-individual, we're getting back a healthy Great Lakes environment.
