During summer 2022 I worked in the Paulsen lab within the Soft Materials program of the SU Physics department. (https://paulsengroup.wordpress.com) In the lab, my project focused on the geometric incompatibility of curved shells on flat surfaces. Specifically, my experiment was to map out how thin polystyrene shells either buckle or remain rigid when floated on flat water surfaces, by a phase diagram. As I collected data, I compared it to theoretical predictions based on minimizing gravitational and elastic energies. Show less
