Mark has an excellent management style. He can quickly assimilate the complexities of large software projects without getting caught up in too many details. In my experience, he exhibits great trust in his employees, which enabled me profoundly to do my best work. He is also very open to upward feedback. It was a great pleasure working with him.

Engineering Manager for the Ads Core ML Content Understanding team, building the machine learning stack for content understanding within the ads org at Meta including the main taxonomy, entity extraction and knowledge graph. This requires close collaboration with many research, data science and surface teams across Meta to bring new models to production across text, image and video data trained over massive and evolving datasets. Joined the founding team as the first software engineer and later Engineering Manager for the machine learning team. We initially developed a retail robot and later pivoted to a platform for automated retail similar in concept to Amazon Go, using computer vision and sensor instrumented shelves to track shoppers and products and generate a receipt on the fly without the need for checkout. Currently running in a live retail space open to the public in downtown San Diego. Joined the founding team as the first software engineer and later Engineering Manager for the machine learning team. Restructured the engineering teams at NTENT to transition our search platform from hand-curated rules to machine learning. Completely rebuilt the core natural language engine around machine learning, increasing the quality of search results and greatly reducing the manual effort required to maintain the system. Moved infrastructure from proprietary scripts to a Kubernetes and Docker-based service architecture and introduced GPU model training. Updated the development team process to use continuous integration and test, significantly increasing the speed of product iteration. Took the same machine learning search platform and applied to voice queries and spoken dialog, extending our product portfolio to include voice assistants. Show less

Oversaw design, production, and QA in Huizhou China of bStem, a single board computer based around a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon processor intended for rapid development of computationally intensive vision algorithms on mobile robotics. Led integration into several development robots including eyeRover, a 3D-printed self-balancing robot designed to demonstrate the computational capabilities of the platform. Seeded bStem to robotics startups and research labs who used it to add vision and autonomous operation to a number of commercial and research robots. Show less

Employee #20 and software/firmware lead for autonomous robotics. Design of high-level Python and C++APIs to provide an intuitive interface for combining vision processing with sensor input and motor control. Verilog module development for field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based servo and motor control, velocity and position estimation, power management, and host processor communication. Linux driver optimization (mainly gyro, accelerometer and SPI communication to the FPGA) to remove latency from the sensor-motor control loop for time-critical operations such as flight stabilization on airborne platforms and balancing dynamically unstable wheeled robots. Understanding the mechanisms of information transfer and integration in the brain, and the relationship between neural structure and function. Key theoretic aspects of the research involved extending graph theoretic measures of network connectivity and modularity to the analysis of brain structure, relating the topological properties of underlying brain structure to ongoing functional dynamics, and establishing oscillation as a viable mechanism of selective information transfer between connected brain regions. Key technical aspects involved distributed modeling of spiking neural networks and FPGA-based acceleration of neural simulation. Show less

Technical lead for the UK development group focused on productization of embedded network monitoring and management tools. Projects included active monitoring of networking problems on large corporate intranets using a customers existing network of Voice-over-IP (VoIP) phones (C++) and routers (C) to continuously monitor network congestion and Quality-of-Service (QoS), and provide a real-time map of network conditions, integration of enterprise LDAP directories with Avaya deployment and management tools (Java), and the consolidation of several back-end Avaya products into a single virtualized platform using the Xen hypervisor.
