Mark Skewes is a gentleman and a scholar. His work on the Volumetric Conversion Project was first class, particularly in relation to the determination of crop water requirements for the 50+ crops grown in the SE of SA across 10 climatic bands. I have the utmost respect for Mark's ability to communicate complex technical concepts to the general water user community. I have no hesitation in recommending him for any project associated with crop irrigation science.

Research Scientist - Irrigation

2007 - Present
The primary focus of this position is on irrigated horticulture, including viticulture, citrus and almonds. Recent projects have included the monitoring of water and solute movement through the rootzone of almonds and citrus, using soil solution samplers. The primary project for this position over the past few years has involved research trials and a large on-farm monitoring program investigating the impacts of drought and reduced water allocations on irrigated horticulture crops. Results include evaluation of the relationship between water supply and yield, and the identification of crop management strategies which improve the ability of crops to cope under reduced water availability.
