I have worked with Mark as our patent attorney for more than ten years. Not only is he expert in the law and related business issues, but HE UNDERSTANDS THE TECHNOLOGY, which is essential to writing good spec and strong claims. He is very personable, thorough, and diligent--just a pleasure to work with.

I joined BSKB as a technical specialist in biotechnology. During my time at BSKB I became licensed as a USPTO practitioner and as an attorney, and in time became an equity partner in the firm. I chose to remain in San Diego upon the closing of BSKB's California office. My work at BSKB was primarily to assist clients, including start-up and small companies, in the planning of their intellectual property strategy and in the obtaining of patent rights in their inventions. My experience at BSKB included: • Preparing and prosecuting US, foreign and PCT patent applications in all areas of biotechnology (including cloned genes, purified proteins, vaccines, gene therapy vectors and methods, cell lines and cell culture media and methods), biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, therapeutic methods, diagnostic reagents, and diagnostic methods, analytic methods and materials sciences • Prosecuting interferences • Performing a variety of opinion work, including patentability, validity and infringement analyses and freedom to operate opinions • Assisting clients in licensing matters • Counseling of clients on intellectual property strategy • Supervising associates and technical advisors In addition I was a frequent lecturer on intellectual property topics. I participated as an invited speaker at meetings of the Licensing Executive Society and the Biotechnology Industry Organization as well as providing instruction in U.S. patent practice at client law firms and the Danish Patent Office and at various universities and research institutes. I also participated in the Practicing Law Institute as an occasional lecturer and as a contributor to their Patent Law Practice Center. Show less
