I spent 3 months in Uganda volunteering as a research engineer for the Busoga Trust. The research project involved the documentation of best practices for shallow hand-dug well construction and siting in rural Uganda. I travelled around the country observing current construction sites and communicating with the well technicians and local people. I had to determine which methods were effective and which were not. This job was an invaluable experience and allowed me to challenge myself in a new and professional environment. It was necessary for me to conduct research both as part of a team and independently. I quickly adapted to the working environment in Uganda and I was able to achieve the project goals in an effective and timely manner. During the project there were many different cultural aspects of Ugandan society which I had to consider during my research. This experience has allowed me to develop my communication and problem solving skills.
