During this Mining Engineering-focused internship, my plant manager encouraged me to get hands on experience in all aspects of the mining operation. On site, I read equipment manuals in order to help the maintenance crew deconstruct, perform maintenance on, and reassemble the primary production crusher. The Quality Control manager oversaw me perform product specification tests and record differentials to confirm our product was on spec and saleable. Our company Environmental Engineer walked me through inspecting and testing mine discharge and tasked me to create and maintain catch berms and water drainage trenches throughout the summer. I additionally accompanied the assistant supervisors on daily trips to the quarry pit and production plant to check in on the engineers' and operators' work, and the blasting and drilling crews. I helped the plant engineers with regular maintenance work including splicing conveyor belts and changing product screens; and I assisted the drilling and blasting crew by packing boreholes with ANFO, detonators, and stemming material. Off-site, I joined a Construction Manager and learned the process Tilcon's product takes from the plant to its paving operations. I traveled to several other quarries to learn how product is shipped from a quarry by barge to NYC distributors; the process of recycling concrete for asphalt, as well as testing asphalt competency; and preparing and testing product samples for NYSDOT jobs. Over the course of my internship, I put together an updated mine plan that I could incorporate much of the knowledge I gained from the summer into. At the time, the outdated mine plan was based on the previous management's focus on production, which did not take into account quarry longevity and reserve optimization. My intern project is attached below and includes the report, as well as my presentation with diagrams and notes that I presented to company corporate representatives, including the company President.
