For over half a century, Imperial Valley College (IVC) has been providing academic and vocational training to the people of Southern California's low desert communities. The college is located approximately 120 miles east of San Diego, 60 miles west of Yuma, AZ. and 10 miles north of the US/Mexico border. Full-time faculty at IVC engage in a variety of tasks typical of most community college professors such as committee work, shared governance and meeting the needs of the students by teaching, record keeping, and academic advising. Regular and overload course assignments include introduction to psychology, biological psychology, developmental psychology, the psychology of learning, cognitive psychology, research methods and statistics for the behavioral sciences. These courses can count towards an Associates Degree from IVC or they can transfer to CSU or UC schools and count as GE or elective credits. The vast majority of IVC students identify as Hispanic, Chicano or Latino and many are first-generation college students. Thus, social and cultural competency/sensitivity to this demographic including the ability to communicate in both English and Spanish is important for fostering student success. IVC students also benefit from a strategic alliance the college has with nearby San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus located in Calexico, CA where many IVC students will ultimately transfer to pursue more advanced degrees.
