In 2021 I moved on from leading our Content department to take a place on the senior leadership team at FindAUniversity. As our Director of Audience and Editorial I'm responsible for ensuring our websites and other services reach the audiences most able to benefit from them and that the standards we set in serving and supporting prospective postgraduate students remain as high as they always have been. This involves acting as an editor in chief for our information and advice as well as directing and supporting SEO work across our sites; I like to think of myself as 'technically an SEO', but not a very technical one.I also do a lot of work to ensure our audience and university partners benefit from the rich data we have access to: understanding the needs of prospective postgraduate students in order to help universities meet them. I regularly publish and present around this data and, if we don't already know each other, there's a reasonable chance this is where we've crossed paths - happy to connect if so and always up for a chat about things postgraduate. • Head of Content
      • Sep 2016 - Aug 2021

In 2016 I moved from simply writing and editing content to heading it (my opinions about 'heading' as a present-participle gerund are less pronounced). Here's what I wrote when I was last asked to summarise my Role & Responsibilities:"Overall responsibility for B2C content strategy and leadership of the Content Department. Additional responsibility for elements of B2B content strategy. Jointly developing our brand as a respected IAG resource and as expert commentators on postgraduate education policy, student IAG needs and relevant aspects of student marketing and recruitment."I promise you my writing is usually more interesting than that. Of course, writing content is all very well. But have you tried editing it? You'll never look back. Particularly if, like me, you have strong opinions about the correct use of semi-colons and whether 'wanting' needs to be a present-participle gerund when we also have words like 'want' and 'wants'.

Everyone starts their career somewhere. Writing web content is a good place to start if you like working with written content on websites. I did.

    • Office Assistant, Data Entry Person and Actual Envelope Stuffer Extraordinaire
      • Feb 2013 - Jan 2014

I started out at FindAUniversity in a somewhat supernumerary role as a temporary office assistant, working two days a week during my PhD. This is a fancy way of saying that I did a bit of data entry, wrote a tiny bit of email copy and, at one point, actually stuffed envelopes (with letters). For years, I didn't include this bit on LinkedIn, but I've decided to add it now that I'm a Director. Because FindAUniversity is the kind of company where someone can go from stuffing envelopes to being part of the senior leadership team. And I'm really proud to be part of the senior leadership team at a company like that.Incidentally, one of the few things I didn't do during this year was make tea. This is because I was terrified of giving someone the wrong drink or mug. One of our co-founders eventually cottoned on to this and put me on the spot during an office lunch, with colleagues available to guide my hand. Leadership in action. Show less
