  Doctorate Degree: Theme: Maternal nutritional status and birth outcomes of the offspring in women accessing private and public medical services in the Free State. “What happens in the womb lasts a lifetime” During the first 1,000 days of a human life, lasting from conception until the second year of life, the most important developmental steps occur. A mother’s nutritional status prior to conception and during conception is of utmost importance for the wellbeing of her child for the rest of his/ her life. The aim of the research is to assess maternal nutritional and anthropometric status and determine how these variables are associated with birth outcomes of the offspring in the public health sector and patients in the private healthcare sector in the Free State.
