MASTER RESEARCH: HYDROTREATMENT OF AQUEOUS GLUCOSE SOLUTIONS Pyrolysis is a technology to convert biomass into pyrolysis oil, which takes place in the absence of oxygen at approximately 500ºC. Existing installations in industry (refineries) have the potential to be used to produce chemicals and fuel from this pyrolysis oil. However, the oil can not be co-fed directly, due to it’s reactivity, high water and oxygen content, which makes it immiscible with fossile oil. Therefore an additional upgrading step is required in which water and oxygen are removed and the reactivity of the pyrolysis oil is reduced. Some of the compounds that are responsible for this reactivity of pyrolysis oil are the sugars. In this master research the polymerization and hydrodeoxygenation behaviour of glucose as model compound for the sugar fraction of pyrolysis oil during upgrading is investigated. The focus of the thesis is mainly on the effect of several process parameters on polymerization and hydrogenation reactions of glucose during the hydrodeoxygenation process. The final goal is to gain knowledge on the effect of parameters and important indicators to study the balance between these polymerization and hydrodoxygenation reactions. Show less
