Qualifications: BA Hons (English) (Witswatersrand), BA Hons (Communication), HDE (Unisa), MPhil (Applied Ethics), DPhil (St Augustine College ZA). Professor Smurthwaite holds The Bishop Fürst Chair of Applied Ethics in Catholic Social Teaching, and is Academic Dean and Acting Registrar at St Augustine College of South Africa, where she teaches Business Ethics at postgraduate (Masters) levels. Her areas of research and publication include the corporation and economic justice in South Africa, Catholic Social Thought, especially as an ethical framework for examining the economy and related issues and ethical business leadership. Her publications include work on the purpose of the corporation, the unequal distribution of wealth in South Africa, executive remuneration, governance and Catholic Social teaching, the moral responsibilities of leaders in various sectors, and ethics in banking. She sits on many academic committees and is chairperson of various faculty committees. She also chairs the sub-committee for Ethical Clearance for all research proposals at the College. She a member of the Editorial Committee for St Augustine Papers. Show less
