City Year Boston has about a 25% acceptance rate and I am honored to work for such a prestigious organization. I serve at Charlestown High School in a ninth grade math and engineering class as a mentor and tutor to students in the classroom. Daily, I work with around 60 students. I help them with anything from classwork, homework, behavioral management skills, and attendance improvement. I input data weekly to make sure that I reach 900 minutes per student by June of this year.I analysis test scores to see if my students are truly benefiting from my tutoring time with them. My team consists of ten AmeriCorps members who facilitate an after school program that supports students further succeeding in class. I serve around 20 students weekly in the after school program. As one of three after school leaders, I help plan after school events that attract students to our program. So far, I have helped plan two successful events that have had around 20 to 30 students at each of them. Show less

I helped students obtain the information they need regarding course of study and degree attainment. I especially worked on advising students on the Global Education part of the degree process of the College of Social Behavioral Sciences. Daily, I saw around 30 students in the office and advised them to the best of my abilities. I connected students to campus resources by listening to their needs and using what I was trained on to connect the student to the correct services. If I did not know the answer to any question, I quickly consulted the head adviser of The College of Social Behavior Sciences. I constantly participated in office work and practiced professionalism when working with UMass faculty and students. I also participated in open house days where I actively attempted to recruit future UMass students. Show less

    • Late Night Event Coordinator
      • Sep 2016 - May 2017

I helped plan and set up movie watching events that occurred nearly every Friday and Sunday. Regularly, my coworker and I had around 30 students a showing. There were about 20 movie showings a semester so about 40 movie showings in the whole school year. This involved collaboration with the university auxiliary department and other members of the UPC organization to have out events run smoothly. My coworker and I programmed campus wide events for 300 students or more the first Friday of every month. This came to around seven major events in the school year. We budgeted around $5,000 every event and communicated with outside vendors to come to our university while demonstrating an exceptional amount of professionalism. We also collaborated with different members of the organization to support them in putting on large scale events like Homecoming and the Spring Concert which attract thousands of students and alum. I provided children with mentoring while they navigated the difficulties that came with studying topics regarding social justice, like the School to Prison Pipeline. I practiced and discovered aspects of social justice in multiple trainings that helped me address students' discomfort. I dove into understanding my privilege as a white cis-gendered woman and that allowed me to be the best mentor and intern I could be for my students. I taught students to express ideas via writing and acting while collaborating with the American Repretory Theater to better my skills in supporting the students. I mainly worked with around 20 students daily between the ages of 12 and 14 years old. Show less
