I highly recommend Marielle, she has worked with me on a handful of marketing & branding projects. Marielle is commercially minded, a great listener, over delivers, an energiser & does everything with a smile on her face. I will continue to use Marielle on future projects, nice to deal with someone who you can trust to always get the job done well.

I should probably lead with... "Marielle is directly responsible for the fastest growth area of our business". before following that statement up with... "because she's technically gifted within her field, gives her heart and soul to everything she works on, is unflappably positive (always), and is deeply loved by her internal and external clients". Take a bow, Marielle.

Since leaving the corporate world, my life has become all about start-ups. From the onset, my goal has always been to help entrepreneurs achieve their goals. Although my core focus is marketing, as my approach is strategic and business oriented, my role quickly evolved to include business advisory and consultancy. Joining L.I.C. felt like a natural next step. Created with the mission of funding, supporting and nurturing founders on their journey to success, L.I.C. is driven by wanting to see more women-led start-ups and early stage companies achieve their goals. Bringing together a diverse network of individuals with extensive experience across multiple industries and disciplines, L.I.C. thus not only provides capital, but also guidance and mentorship to its investees. After successfully setting up the Communications Department for Universum that drives the data collection underpinning Universum’s renowned annual employer of choice survey, I was invited to become the Head of Digital for Universum APAC. Starting from zero, I developed the company’s product offering, recruited a competent team and put in place robust processes to deliver projects across the communications cycle, including social media, websites, email marketing, print and events. The department became the fastest growing within Universum APAC and soon matched well established lines of business in terms of revenue and profitability with impressive companies as part of our client list, including Unilever, General Electric, Danone, OCBC, KPMG, EY and many more. In addition to growing the business and ensuring projects were delivered to a high standard, I was responsible for business strategy, recruitment, training, performance management and budgeting.

    • Marketing & Relationship Manager APAC
      • Jul 2012 - Mar 2014

Moving to Asia, I joined Universum, which had just set up its office in Singapore. Here, I set up a new department and developed and executed the integrated multi-channel marketing strategy behind Universum’s regional student surveys in 10 markets (China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia). This included social media, email marketing, network marketing and ambassador networks, print and events. As part of this, we were one of the first organisations in Asia to use Facebook pages and ads as a marketing tool!As part of my role, I was responsible for all recruitment, training, performance management and budgeting. I built a multilingual team of 8 people in multiple locations, including China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand, which was supported by hundreds of dedicated student ambassadors across the APAC region. Within 1,5 years, Universum’s regional research output more than doubled and I was promoted to build Universum's Digital department in APAC to serve clients.

I was promoted after 9 months and was part of team that moved this department from the US head office to the UK head office, setting everything up from scratch.

As part of my Master's degree, my team and I set-up a company. I was the Financial Director and CEO of the company. The company operated in the fashion/entertainment industry. Within a year we set-up a website, Facebook page, created a range of products and sold all of our stock. It was a very enriching experience, putting one's ideas to the test and learning by doing. I learnt countless lessons that I still apply today. Also, working with people across disciplines and nationalities helped me develop my management skills and international perspective.

I did my internship at Vodacom during the last year of my Bachelor's. I had the great privilege of working under Tersia Esbach in the Market Intelligence, Group Strategy Department. Besides being able to freely complete my primary research work, I was trusted to play a supporting role in the company's strategic planning. It was fascinating to see some of the things I had been working on come to life over the past years, such as mobile finance. Vodacom is one of the leading telecommunications providers in South Africa. It is majority owned by Vodafone, one of the world’s largest mobile communications companies by revenue.

Having been curious about becoming a journalist, I interned at the Republikein, writing social pieces, doing photography and conducting interviews and general fieldwork.I learnt a lot about working with different people and engaging them to capture a story in a genuine way. I was also exposed to the difficult situations people live in, which was eye-opening and humbling. The Repulikein is one of the major newspapers in Namibia.
