Marieke is a master facilitator! I have had the pleasure of working with her since 2016, and I trust her fully to lead workshops at Math for America, during which she guides teachers in processing the socio-emotional challenges of teaching, their own trauma that can impede their growth and efficacy as educators, and the trauma that their students bring to the table. She leads teachers by example with compassion and clarity. The feedback about the workshops Marieke facilitates is a always outstanding.

It is a true pleasure to work with Marieke. She worked with us to design a global literacy curriculum for elementary age youth participating in an after school setting. Throughout the process, she was flexible, proactive, and thoughtful. In the end, Marieke delivered a beautiful curriculum that engaged young people's minds and hearts. I highly recommend Marieke and look forward to working with her again!

Co-developed and facilitated a participatory 4-part mini course "Race as Trauma." "Participants explored such questions as: Is race real or imagined? What can we learn from research that centers Blackness and the experience of the oppressed? How do the harm and trauma of slavery persist today? And how do we challenge race, racism, oppression, and privilege in American schools? Using a variety of Zoom modalities, we looked at the origin of race and racism, in this country, and the research that shows how it has impacted everyone, the oppressed and oppressor, in different ways. We looked at the specific impacts this has on education in the US still today and explored the power of implicit bias as early as the pre-K classroom. Throughout, we provided opportunities for teachers to look at their own teaching to see where they can apply what they learned to elevate their practice." Show less

Developed and facilitated a 4-part online mini-course Creating a Healing Centered (Virtual) Space: "Recent research has shown that traumatic childhood experiences are much more common than previously known or recognized. Add to that the collective trauma of COVID-19, its disproportionate impact on communities of color, and how that exemplifies this country’s ongoing racial trauma, that was present in our schools and classrooms long before Covid-19. In this interactive mini-course, we will learn about trauma, how it impacts the developing brain, and how it impacts students’ ability to learn. We will explore skills and practices that teachers can employ to create a more trauma-aware, sensitive, and healing-centered classroom to support all students’ learning, whether remotely or in-person." Responsible for developing and facilitating a 6-part online mini-course Getting Ready for Fall: Welcoming Students Back With Trauma-Informed Practices. "In this participatory virtual 6-part workshop teachers came together to prepare for the new school year, in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and the national movement for racial justice. We created a space together in which the core human need to connect and belong were central. It was be a space for not knowing and uncertainty, in which we prepared for the new school year. With a heavy focus on Social and Emotional Learning, mindful awareness practice, self and collective care, restorative framing and healing practices, we looked at ways of inviting our students back to the physical building (or virtual space as the case may be) in fall. We emphasized compassion and building healing classroom environments, recognizing the racist history of this country and the different levels of trauma that individuals, as part of their larger communities, bring with them into our school buildings." Mar 2020 - Jun 2020
Developed and facilitated weekly online sessions for teachers during the Covid-19 era. "Teachers Together in a Time of Distancing" provided participants the opportunity to connect with other educators to share their thoughts and feelings, successes and challenges, resources and needs. We know that connection is a core human need. Socially and emotionally, connection can help keep us psychologically healthy and resilient as Covid-19 spread. We can’t be available for our students if we don’t have the energy or bandwidth ourselves, worse still if we get sick. Coming together on a weekly basis, participants practiced self-care and explored best ways to co-construct a virtual space to be responsive, relevant and supportive, as they moved through the peak of the pandemic in New York City together. This, with the goal of staying as strong and healthy as possible, anticipating teacher and student needs during the pandemic. Show less

In addition, facilitators will propose and provide opportunities to explore a set of research-based, culturally responsive strategies and tools to further promote equity in the classroom. Educators will walk away from the workshop with a toolkit and a better understanding of how they can incorporate best practices in equitable instruction in their schools and throughout their careers. Designed and facilitated an Interactive Restorative Circles Workshop in which participants will be introduced to the different uses of restorative circles—from building and strengthening communities, in part one, to repairing relationships when harm has been done, in part 2. The restorative circle invites everyone in, welcoming all who want to participate, sustain and repair the community. Conflict and harmful behavior, as inevitable parts of community, are seen through a restorative lens, and the circles held to address them focus on repairing relationships, making things right, and taking responsibility.
