I'm currently managing the Pastoral Early Warning System in West and Central Africa combining drought mapping (from satellite imageries) and field data collection. This includes the management of five focal points in five different countries and about 120 field data collectors. I'm also in charge of the technical support (GIS, BI, data analysis) for West and Central Africa missions. I manage both field data collection, analysis and diffusion through dashboards, online web platform and a website.I also give a lot of trainings to multiple humanitarian actors, civil society workers and state representative on mapping, spatial analysis and remote sensing. Besides, I participate to multiple field missions in the Sahel to do amongst other participatory mapping.

I have joined this socially responsible African startup as a Product Specialist. I'm involved in all parts of the mapping projects, from the field preparation to the treatment of satellite/drone imagery, including data analysis and interpretation.ILKREA is specialized in geospatial technologies and data-driven systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and satellites to enact smarter and faster decisions at a lesser cost. I graduated as PhD student in the Geomatics Lab (UCL) in September 2018. My thesis is about crop production variability estimation in the Mali's cotton belt using remote sensing and social sciences. The main challenge of the thesis is explained here bellow. In sub-Saharan Africa, most of rural population depends on farming systems to meet their basic needs. Smallholder farming systems face soil fertility challenges, in a context of demographic and environmental pressures. Operational Early Warning Systems were established to improve farmer food security and decrease their vulnerability. These systems often rely on ground measurements and information derived from low resolution satellites hardly compatible with smallholder farming patterns constraining the agriculture monitoring. Major advancements in remote sensing open a new era of high revisit time and high spatial resolution free imagery which can be used to estimate relevant variables for smallholder farming systems monitoring. In this thesis we estimate crop production at the village level and try to understand its variability. This requires, amongst other, cropland classification, crop type classification, yield estimation, yield gaps estimation.Main data used: Sentinel-2, PROBA-V, DigitalGlobe, Pléiade, Landsat, MODIS

Spatial modelling teacher
-
oct. de 2014 - sept. de 2018
During my PhD, I gave classes of spatial modelling of territorial dynamics at about 20-30 master students. Thanks to that experience, I developed my communication skills and improveed my time management and classroom management. The classes consisted on three different modules on (i) habitat suitability map, (ii) change analysis and (iii) ecological modelling.

Field Campaign leader
-
ago. de 2016 - dic. de 2017
In the context of my PhD, I coordinate and lead two field campaigns in rural Mali in 2016 (October and November) and 2017 (November). During these campaigns, I managed a team of minimum 6 field operators that collected ground data including biomass and yield measurements in four crop type fields (cotton, maize, millet and sorghum), crop type information and farmer interviews. I also trained the field operators of ICRISAT and NGO AMEDD to collect in-situ data. In 2016, we collected yield measurements in more than a hundred fields and 800 crop type polygons. In 2017, we interviewed more the 50 farmers to obtain information about their agricultural practices and personnal rationale.

I completed my master thesis at INTA in Buenos Aires where I worked in a young research team on water use efficiency and crop modeling for maize and alfalfa. I participated in a 3-week field campaign in la Pampa to collect biophysical variables including LAI, fapar, fCover and phenological stages. I stayed 3 months in Argentina and then worked on the master thesis from Belgium.Main data used: MODIS and Proba-V I completed my master thesis at INTA in Buenos Aires where I worked in a young research team on water use efficiency and crop modeling for maize and alfalfa.
