I undertook an intensive internship at the international development NGO as part of my MA course. I was mainly working in the Trusts and Grants department, and was responsible for researching and writing a funding proposal to receive a scale-up grant for an ongoing DFID funded project. The project aimed to train female sex workers to act as peer educators in their communities in rural areas of Northern Tanzania to raise awareness about HIV prevention and testing and women's rights. I also spent some time working with the Communications Officer and helped towards creating the monthly newsletter. I gained skills in research and how to write funding proposals, as well as an insight into how NGOs function and what is required to secure funding. I wrote a report about the experience, which explored the moral issues associated with aid and how African Initiatives successfully attempts to overcome these issues. Show less

I taught and managed my own class of children aged 4-5. The job involved planning and teaching lessons over the whole curriculum, including English, PE, science, maths and art. I also had to perform individual evaluations and write reports every 2 weeks, as well as take part in many extra-curricular activities, such as trips and open-days. I learnt how to work well and cooperate with my Taiwanese teaching assistant and to overcome obstacles related to language and cultural differences. After completing a TEFL course, I was employed by Kent's School of English in Madrid. I taught children, teenagers and adults of all levels English in preparation for the Cambridge English exams. Duties included teaching English grammar, vocabulary and culture in fun and engaging ways, and being inventive with games, songs and arts and crafts. I developed communication, organisation, and disciplinary skills, as well as initiative and the ability to think on the spot.
