This company has the goal of increasing training and employment opportunities for Northerners to build a resilient and self-sufficient economy. Through my role, I support the development of the company’s Safety & Training division and other new initiatives, such as designing energy-efficient Northern housing solutions. Our guiding principle is to achieve a sustainable “by northerners for northerners” system in partnership with leading construction, safety and training, and housing providers from across Canada. Besides conducting research and supporting day-to-day operations, I manage relationships with Federal and Territorial government agencies, skilled trades educational institutions, and other partners to ensure our goals and efforts are aligned. I also collaborate closely with First Nations and Indigenous communities to build training programs and housing solutions that will be best suited for their communities’ needs and economic development goals.

Canvas is a management consulting firm focused on mobilizing capital to drive social and environmental outcomes. As a member of the founding team, I supported various projects for our clients (typically financial institutions, VCs, family foundations, among others) by providing project management/research support and providing analysis for various investment opportunities. Some of my responsibilities included creating impact measurement and management frameworks for private equity portfolios, supporting the design of gender-lens investing strategies, and evaluating investment opportunities.

SIA is a national initiative training impact-driven youth to support the social innovation ecosystem in Canada. After participating in the creation and delivery of SIA since 2019, my role as advisor was to support Fellows through their projects by providing mentorship and guidance. I also supported the team during the recruitment season by reviewing applications, conducting interviews, and answering potential candidates questions. Knowing the ins and outs of the program allowed me to support the core team on an as-needed basis.

    • Program Coordinator
      • May 2020 - Aug 2020

As a program coordinator, I was responsible for running the 2020 summer internship with 2 of my colleagues. Together, we managed 22 analysts across 6 cities through our first fully virtual/remote internship due to COVID-19. I was responsible for directly managing 8-10 analysts and my role was to ensure they had all the necessary tools to have an enjoyable, impactful, and safe learning experience over the summer as we navigated the first year of the pandemic together. Throughout these 4 months, I facilitated bi-weekly team sessions with the 25 members of our team to build a cohesive culture of trust and collaboration. Along with my two colleagues, we began spearheading the equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts for our young initiative, which have now become outstanding thanks to the current Executive Director. Overall, my role required significant project and relationship management skills, being comfortable mentoring analysts, and excellent communications skills to successfully deliver a virtual program.

The d.studio provides students with studio-based experience applying design processes and thinking strategies for business innovation by collaborating with an external client partner to deliver real-world solutions that create economic, social, and environmental value using strategic design. I was lucky to collaborate with Professor Dharini Thiruchittampalam for 3 terms in a row, guiding over 90 students through this course. Because of my long tenure as a TA, I had the chance to provide and implement feedback to improve the course after every term and played a large role in adapting the course for its virtual delivery at the beginning of the pandemic. Besides supporting with grading and the usual TA duties, I had the chance to mentor students through a variety of consulting projects with companies such as Neighbour Lab, Unbuilders, YVR, and Nurse Next Door.

For my co-op program, I worked as an Associate at S3i for a year and was involved in a variety of applied research/consulting projects that supported a variety of clients ranging from non-profits to Indigenous economic development corporations. Some past projects include: developing a business plan and financial model for sustainable aquaculture projects in Vancouver Island and conducting a social return on investment analysis for children’s literacy programs. During this year, I also supported the launch of the HSBC Social Innovation Academy in May 2019 by providing admin and operational support during the recruitment process and project management/research support to the first cohort of Analysts that summer.

This summer internship was a fun and informative introduction to the impact investing industry. I was lucky to participate in a large research project to evaluate the impact investing landscape in Canada (report below). We had a team of 7 learning with/from investors, entrepreneurs, and intermediaries to understand all aspects related to the flow of capital, support systems available, investment vehicles, etc. My research focused specifically on understanding the experience of intermediaries (incubators, accelerators, etc.) in this space. After completing my summer internship, I stayed on part-time while completing my third year of university.

Groundswell is an alternative business school that helps folks put their values to work. My time at Groundswell was short and sweet as I temporarily helped them during the summer of 2019 to help plan the expansion of their programming to two new communities outside of Vancouver. My job was rooted in listening and observing the program delivery methods and organizational culture, so I could document them and create tangible material for new partners to use in new locations.
