      I was lucky to get a reporting job right after college thanks to the progressive policies of editor Doug Turner, who believed in getting more women into the newsroom. I covered government, environmental matters (especially toxic waste issues), crime, the police beat and general news in Niagara County and then became reporter and bureau chief covering government in Erie County until I left for law school. I did not like lawyers much at the beginning of my career as a reporter, but over time found that they often were the people with access to the most accurate and complete information and the power to effect change.
