Head of Center: Prof. Paolo Netti (PhD) Research Platforms EHS (Environment, Health, Security) The Center for Advanced Biomaterials for Healthcare at CRIB uses cutting edge technologies to engineer bio-logically inspired material platforms for applications in the biomedical sector. Research activities are mainly focused on the detection of relevant molecular signals and of the development of strategies and technologies to encode signals with controlled spatial arrangement and temporal evolution on synthetic platforms. The group has developed know-how in signal presentation at the interface between material and cells and has built expertise in engineering material biochemical-biophysical and microstructural properties to modulate cellular response. The activities are mainly driven by requirements of pharmaceutical and biotechnological interest and stimulate interdisciplinary joint collaborations of researchers belonging to both the academic and industrial field.

CRIB (Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Biomaterials) was set up in 1992, one of the earliest interdepartmental structures in Italy. It aimed to create a centre of excellence where researchers from different fields of expertise (medicine, chemistry, biology, physics and engineering) could apply their complementary skills and carry out integrated activities in the biomaterials field. The centre has been operating actively, quickly becoming a reference point in Europe in the fields of biomaterials, prosthetic systems, tissue engineering and drug delivery. Biomaterials have developed and morphed over time, from inert - primarily used in prosthetics - to proactive elements, able nowadays to influence cell behaviour. CRIB evolved alongside, adapting its staff to best reflect the ongoing scientific progress and, at the same time, contributing to it with novel professional profiles, a natural outcome of its synergic activities. At present, CRIB counts representatives from 10 departments of the University of Naples “Federico II”, 10 full professors, 7 associate professors and 7 researchers. Over 100 people - junior researchers, PhD students - work together every day in CRIB’s labs and classes.
