Sexpression runs peer-led sex & relationship education schemes in schools, youth groups and the local community around the country. The volunteers are university students studying healthcare subjects or students with an interest in sexual health. Our aims are: - Creating opportunities to discuss sexual matters in an open, non- judgmental environment; - Promoting individual self-esteem and empowerment; - Encouraging respect for personal beliefs and values; - Facilitating informed decision-making and autonomy regarding sex; - Ensuring young people have the skills to access sources of confidential advice. We work with young people aged 11-17 and tailor content accordingly. We teach in an informal and interactive manner, hoping to encourage discussion and free-thought through role-play, games and quizzes. We explore and discuss topics such as: - puberty - self-esteem and body image - relationships - decision making & consent - gender & sexuality - contraception - STIs - pregnancy Please get in touch if you work for a school or youth group in the Leeds area and are interested in Sexpression coming and running a session for your young people. • Volunteer & Stock Co-ordinator
      • Jul 2018 - Sep 2018

As an organisation we mainly worked in Grande Synthe where there are approximately 1000 refugees, predominately from Iraqi Kurdistan, sleeping rough. We worked to not only fulfil the urgent material needs of the women & children there, but, just as importantly, to provide them with psychosocial support. We did this through providing daily activities for women & children; connecting the women to other legal & medical support services and distributing emergency items such as tents, warm clothes & hygiene products. We aimed to give the women more agency over their lives and treat them with dignity, from distributing clothes in a ‘free shop’ which enabled them to come and choose what they’d like to wear instead of having to just accept whatever we chose for them, to making an active effort to learn their language (predominately Sorani Kurdish) and encouraging them to correct us and teach us more as well as ensuring any information we provided them about other charities or support was in their own language. We had to be incredibly adaptable in the service that we provided as the situation on the ground was constantly changing, due to frequent evictions and police action, so we were always modifying how we did things as well as coordinating with other charities on the ground. In addition to my role as a general volunteer I was also the on-the-ground stock coordinator and thus in charge of training volunteers how to sort clothes, coordinating incoming donations and monitoring stock levels to communicate our urgent needs back to the Uk-based media team. This became particularly challenging after the majority of our stock was destroyed in a warehouse fire and we had to relocate to another warehouse. Show less
