Thanks to the help and dedication of Maria Gutierrez, I was able to participate in a Non-Employment Based Opportunity (NEBO) during my first year at Dominican University. As an Undocumented student, opportunities that help to expand one’s leadership and academic skills are often hard to come by. But thanks to Maria, I was able to participate in a Chemistry Research project that helped me obtain a lot of important laboratory experience as well as the great opportunity of attending the 2022 GURSCI expo where I presented my research. Maria helped in every step of the project, from brainstorming the NEBO project topic to coordinating with many departments to make this project become a reality and allow me be a part of this wonderful opportunity that helped enrich my research skills and laboratory techniques during my time at Dominican University.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Maria for the past 3.5 years at Dominican University. She has transformed our career development programs to connect with new employers, create equitable career advancement opportunities for undocumented individuals, and has focused her work through a lens of dismantling barriers for students from marginalized and disenfranchised backgrounds. Maria has created a successful Instagram Live program that brings on staff, alumni, and employers to get time to connect with students and others within the Dominican community. These Instagram Lives have brought in a large following and are a great opportunity to meet students where they are by going to their preferred social media platform for career preparedness programming. Maria has also created very strong relationships with faculty and staff throughout all of Dominican’s graduate and undergraduate colleges. She is regularly asked to present to classes, work with pre-professional student groups, and guest lecture for college-sponsored programs. She has been teaching a career and vocational exploration course for several years and has high evaluations from her students. The students in her classes feel supported by Maria and enjoy the activities that she designs for them to find and explore their passions. Overall, Maria is a top-quality professional who connects extremely well with students and works collaboratively across campus.
