The atrocities visited upon women in this play, are an eerie echo of the fate of the Iraqi people. As the political refugee, Huda says: “Saddam was the greater enemy than, […] Imperialism.” Why did Saddam do this? As Huda says: “No one is born knowing how to behead – they learned torture. He took ordinary men – they were forced to watch videos – to cut off a hand, a tongue; these men cannot be liberated, for them there is no peace; they cannot stop killing.” Why tear apart the body of your mother & father? It is not politics; it is misogyny.” This violence against themselves, against their women, & against their men, it is not in Islam, not in the Koran. Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib, 4th leader of the Islamic World, & husband of Fatimah-daughter of the Prophet Mohammed, declared: “God created sexual desire in ten parts; then he gave nine parts to women & one to men.” Did Saddam act out of a jealous need to possess? Did he want all the parts of desire, want all the fertility of the land & water? Iraq was Sumer; she was the Fertile Crescent, between two rivers, where many scholars place the Garden of Eden. Just as Inanna lost her identity, Iraq has lost her glorious past, lost her beautiful running river, lost her fertility. Reed man & Reed woman are gone; “our marshlands now are different - they have been diverted damned & dried.” The women in this piece are trying to find & hold on to that rich & storied past, to give it to their children, to preserve it for the future. Their gift to us, our inheritance, is in the water, & in the wood of rooted trees, in their language & art. This play is a song: listen to the music; listen to the story. When you leave, you leave with a gift, & a burden you must carry them like water. Do not spill; treasure every drop, every pearl of wisdom. You never swim in the same river twice. Show less
