Provide a better understanding of fatigue crack closure behavior in small cracks at high stress levels under variable amplitude loading through experiments including crack opening stress measurements, closure free crack growth rates, service load history tests, fatigue tests, and measurements of crack shape development using axial closed-loop servo-controlled electro-hydraulic testing machines at the University of Waterloo.Conduct fatigue tests for industrial companies including John Deere, The Ford Motor Company, Nucor Steel, Metaldyne, and the American Iron and Steel Institute. The experiments aimed at developing stress-strain curves, strain-life curves under constant amplitude loading and effective strain-life curve under variable amplitude loading, and fatigue crack growth curves under different stress ratios.

Part of the Bar Fatigue Application Group. This Group focuses on developing a steel database for the ground vehicle and original equipment industries. The database includes fatigue data, as well as a compilation of associated steel processing, mechanical property and microstructure information. The research includes conducting experiments on more than 120 steel iterations and investigating the effect of variation in composition within SAE limits on fatigue properties, residual stress measurements, effect of varying hardness due to change in microstructure on fatigue properties, comparison of fatigue properties of as-rolled and forged micro alloyed steels, the effects of random overloads on fatigue behavior, and continued comparisons of the fatigue properties of atmosphere carburized and vacuum carburized steels.
