As a Technical Editor at the American Diabetes Association, I copyedited original, highly specialized, scientific manuscripts that required forming professional, working relationships with authors and other editors and production staff. Often, authors were not native English speakers, so the ability to interpret through context was important in maintaining the integrity of the scientific information in accordance with American Diabetes Association Journal style. I am also very familiar with standard proofreading marks and the proofreading process. In addition to proofreading and editing for the American Diabetes Association, I also wrote PatientInforms (writing sample available at http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-research/summaries/jackson-bladder-control.jsp). PatientInform is a service that provides the lay audience with the latest in diabetes research in language they can understand. To write PatientInforms, good reading comprehension skills are needed to change words without changing meanings. Show less

At Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB), I created and maintained the first Assistive Technology Product Catalog. This catalog gave brief descriptions as well as photos of the technology products CLB offered. Using basic HTML, I also put this catalog online. I also wrote the Innovations in Assistive Technology monthly newsletter, which included information about CLB’s latest products and services, technology tips, and human interest pieces. Furthermore, the media relations department often used the newsletter and catalog for press kits. In addition, at CLB, I served as the first point of contact for clients and customers needing assistance with their technology products and purchases, often giving technology demonstrations and setting up meetings for the sales manager. I also arranged travel for the sales manager and technicians. Because CLB provides a wide range of services for people who are blind and visually impaired, I was often called upon to help in different departments, such as the Low Vision Department, where I scheduled eye exams and gave low-vision demonstrations, and the Executive Office, where I scheduled travel for the CEO, vice presidents, and other staff. In addition, I represented CLB at tradeshows and conferences and met with clients and other organizations to discuss assistive technology solutions. Show less
