I was a visitor in Maria's class at Bucknell University. I don't think it's an overstatement when I say that her students were enamored with her--and with good reason. She expertly connects historical content with contemporary issues, carefully allowing the students to find their own way and reach their own conclusions while still elevating and advancing the conversation. As the conversation ran at least 20 minutes beyond the allotted class time, the majority of students remained to continue the dialogue! Now that's what the academy is all about--intellectual discourse with a respected, intelligent professor as the conductor.
