It aimed the establishment of sustainable and controlled technologies for the production of marine sponge collagen membranes, to be used as tissue engineering structures in skin regeneration. In particular, it consisted in the selection of a suitable solution for re-solubilizing the collagen extracted from Chondrosia reniformis marine-sponge, since it is not acid soluble. Then, membranes were obtained by freeze-drying and different types and concentrations of cross-linkers were tested. Currently, the membranes cytotoxicity and their ability to isolate rapid adherent keratinocytes are also being evaluated. Show less

It encompassed the random selection of a sample group of 600 adolescents, as part of the cohort study EPITeen. Serum samples, previously collected and stored at -80ºC, were registered, packed in dry ice and sent to the analysis laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, in Lisbon. There, I quantified biomarkers of bone turnover (P1NP and CTX), citokines (RANKL and OPG) and adipokines (leptin and adiponectin) in 1200 serum samples, using ELISA assays. This work resulted in two scientific papers that have already been submitted (with me being co-author) and a third one is in preparation (where I am the first author). I have also quantified adiponectin, resistin and leptin in serum samples of 900 new-born, as part of another cohort study named Geração XXI, and managed the Biobank during the last year. I also participated in the second follow-up assessment of the EPITeen cohort, in the University of Porto Medical School, which begun in August 2011. This assessment is still ongoing and includes the application of presential questionnaires (social and demographic characteristics, healthcare, routine habits and physical activity, food frequency questionnaire) and physical examination (anthropometric measurements, electrocardiogram, arterial pressure, calcaneal quantitative ultrasound and spirometry), to a total of 2947 participants.
