As part of the Montana Consultation program, I performed industrial hygiene testing in a wide variety of work environments, most commonly in high hazard industries. I identified workplace hazards for private businesses and public entities, provided advice on compliance with OSHA standards, and conveyed sampling results to the employer, providing guidance for any changes necessary to mitigate occupational exposures. I assisted businesses with the development of required written safety and health programs, including Hazard Communication, PPE, Chemical Hygiene, etc. This position also gave me the opportunity to teach specific aspects of safety and health programs, such as PPE, as well as general topics such as Indoor Air Quality and Industrial Hygiene to professionals receiving OSHA 10- and 30-hour certificates. I left this position to move to Minnesota to be closer to family.

Dissertation title: Indoor coarse particulate matter in wood stove homes: Evaluating exposure and health effects in asthmatic children. Laboratory of Dr. Tony Ward and Dr. Curtis Noonan. University of Montana, Center for Environmental Health Sciences. I gained experience calibrating and troubleshooting complex sampling equipment. I analyzed samples relevant to exposures and compared the results to federal guidelines. I established several protocols and published five peer-reviewed manuscripts (one additional currently in press) regarding sampling methods and exposures. I performed a side project relevant to occupational exposures for wildland firefighters and support personnel in base camps and published my findings in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.
