Erik (Rick) Sommerfeld

Marcel’s design practice bridges architecture and construction. His portfolio speaks to the modern European design that he brings to architecture. He creates unique projects that are well considered from design through final detailing. He brings this same skill set to CU while teaching. His knowledge of building design and construction and his approachability make him one of the most sought after instructor at CU. Marcel has consistently taught studios that train future architects how to rigorously research, identify and respond to the unique parameters of program and context using modern architectural theory. This is a skill that will be applicable for students throughout their careers, and is a design process that he himself uses in his own design practice. In sitting in on his architectural reviews I have found the students to be prepared both technically and verbally to defend their projects. As the instructor for the Columbia Cemetery Design Build project Marcel and his students pulled off an extremely complex yet elegant structure on time and on budget. He helped the students navigate a variety of community organizations and gave them invaluable experience in Design-Build. Marcel’s commitment to the students at the university is unparalleled. Marcel de Lange comes with my highest recommendation.

For Aerogrow International I designed a consumer product called Aerogrow Kitchen garden or Aerogarden. this is an aeroponic planter that allows you to grow lettuce, tomatos, flowers, herbs etc.. conveniently and up to 5x faster then in soil. I was responsible for the initial design of the unit, the design of the initial seed-pods and conceptual design of many spin-offs. Also I produced high quality 3D renderings and animations. visit www.aerogrow.com for more info
