I met Manuele in June 2009 when he joined the Cloning and Expression group of the Novartis Research Center. We worked together until December 2016. Our group was involved in cloning, expression, purification and biochemical and immunological characterization of recombinant proteins. Manuele is endowed with remarkable technical skills, scientific competence, passion for science, creative thinking, spirit of collaboration, attitude to teamwork, dedication and enthusiasm in facing challenges and solving problems, ability to train people, ability to coordinate work groups, flexibility and readiness to adapt to changes. readiness and ability to try new things, constructive criticism, spontaneity and openness to others. With the arrival of Manuele, our group made a remarkable leap in quality, especially in terms of speed and efficiency in data production. For the technical and scientific competence and for his openness towards others, Manuele became soon a reference person for people needing an help. The main contributions that Manuele has given over the years have been the following ones: He has revolutionized the way of growing bacteria by introducing new methods of cultivation that were more fast and more efficient. As our group cultivated several thousand bacterial clones the innovations introduced by Manuele greatly fastened the work of the group. He has developed high throughput methods for multiple small-scale IMAC purification that fastened the characterization of thousand of proteins in terms of yields and solubility. He has made a major contribution to antigen design in order to produce fused proteins and to make the insoluble recombinant proteins soluble. He has dedicated himself to the formation and growth of numerous students, interns and doctoral students. He strongly contributed to keeping the lab tidy, safe and updated in terms of tools and equipment. In summary: Manuele has always been extremely helpful for our group and for the company. He has my esteem and my approval but also the esteem and approval of all other people who have interacted over the years with him. Personally I have had from Manuele much more than I have given to him. I know it is the same for my colleagues and collaborators who interacted with him. It will certainly be the same for those who will deal with Manuele in the future.

I met Manuele at the very first day of my PhD course at CERM and It was clear from the beginning that my mentor is a "hothead" fully devoted to science. His practical knowledge, brilliant ideas and passion were contagious for me as a young scientist that enters the marvellous world of molecular biology. Learning from Manuele was one of the best things that happened to me throughout my career. His consequence and enthusiasm were an assurance of the final success of any project that he was involved in. Apart his outstanding scientific skills I highly rate his ability to unite people allowing him to easily get along with colleagues. I am confident that Manuele is an excellent candidate to lead any scientific project. Without a doubt, I would give Manuele my highest reference.

I was involved in the set-up and managment of E.coli small scale expression platfom. The platform has the aim of produceup to mg of purified antigens using small shake flask 250ml or up to 0,.5mg using 24-deep well plate exploiting the potential of high cell density media suitable for induction (enpresso) and autoinduction (NVD proprietary formulation). In this context protocolls for parallel cell lisis, manual small imac purification (up to 24 samples in parallels) were implemented. I setted-up brevibacillus expression sistem using and inducible protomerI design a new antibiotic free selection approach (Europe WO/2015/165841 ) suitable for recombinant protein expression in E.coli in both complex and chemical defined media.I supported a PHD student in the development of in vitro biofilm assay for streptococcus agalactiae.
