The Garvan Institute of Medical Research, renowned for innovation and excellence, is building its next-generation data analysis infrastructure to unlock the secrets of the genome and ultimately transform health care. Garvan’s genome factory sequences 150 Human Genomes every 3 days (18000 genomes per year), and at over 100 Gigabytes per genome we annually generate more than 1.5 Petabytes of raw data that needs to be analysed by data scientists. My role at The Garvan Institute is to research, prototype and deploy new technologies with the mission to reduce the technical complexity and operational costs of the computing resources used by our data scientist community. The technologies I have been involved with goes from private and public cloud infrastructure (OpenStack and Azure), high-performance computing (Sun Grid Engine), distributed storage (Ceph, Panasas, HDFS), distributed computing (Apache Spark) and distributed databases (Apache Kudu). All this running and configured by Horton Works Data platform. Key achievements (see project section for more details): - Accelerate the genomic sequencing and Q&A pipeline by identifying bottlenecks in the data transfer from the sequencing farm (Illumina X10) to the centralized storage (Panasas). - Provision an inhouse cloud solution based in Openstack reducing and simplifying the provisioning of new infrastructures to test new applications. - Adoption of Big Data computing through Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP). - Deploy web-based notebooks based in Apache Zeppelin that provides a more friendly user experience, a curated environment to run user code and integration with existing infrastructure. - Reproduce our HPC cluster in Microsoft Azure so we could run our in house pipelines in external platforms. - 2 server expansions, first in 2016 increasing number of CPUs from 1280 to 1840 and the second one in 2018 from 1840 to 3320 CPUs.

I have also been a supervisor on the backups for all our clients managing 200 servers (1500-1700 backup jobs) daily for all our clients. Key responsibilities: - Collect and analyse client requirements through user requests and incident cases - Provide solutions that fit user needs - Prepare and write process and technical documentation on each client site - Coordinate with other stakeholders and organise the requirements for future projects - Execute projects and follow up with the client to make sure end-user satisfaction Key achievements: - Improve customer service level and satisfaction - Help with recurring customer incidents

Key achievements: - Promoted three times in eighteen months due to my efforts and results. - Process research to migrate the platform to different environments avoiding database and IIS installations. This reduced the time taken to migrate from test environment to production by 70%
