      Metabolic systems biology explains the precise metabolic phenotypes of cellular systems along with the bottlenecks of their physiology with applications in various fields such as agriculture, synthetic biology, metabolic engineering and health. The techniques at the core of metabolic systems biology are - metabolic profiling, metabolomics and fluxomics. Metabolite profiling and metabolomics deals with studying the complete set of metabolites (small molecules) present in a cellular system. The metabolite profiles measured under different conditions captures variations in the physiological states of the organism using technologies such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), liquid chromatography and/or mass spectrometry (LC-MS/GC-MS). Also, Metabolic Flux Analysis (MFA) using 13C substrates (13C-fluxomics) is a powerful approach to quantify multiple intracellular fluxes through the central metabolic pathways. It relies on the assumption that the system is at metabolic and isotopic steady-state, at which point the isotopic label redistribution within metabolites are measured followed by subsequent modelling to determine the in vivo fluxes across the metabolic network. Thus, I aim to apply the techniques of Metabolomics and 13C-Metabolic Flux Analysis to define and understand the metabolic phenotypes of selected plant and microbial systemsn that encounter different conditions and have agricultural and biotechnological applications in particular.
