The occurrence of small cetacean carcasses is common in the central-southern region of Brazil, particularly of Franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei). Recent studies have described a high concentration of carcasses in Management Area II, where fishing activities with gillnets are widespread, and the Beach Monitoring Project of the Santos Basin operates daily in the collection of carcasses. Carcass strandings data are typically used for various purposes, such as determining occurrence areas, geographic distribution, and population status. However, the use of carcasses for such ecological interpretations has recently been questioned due to the statistical limitations of opportunistic encounters. In light of this impasse, the proposal aims to develop tests on buoyancy and decomposition using fresh carcasses and tests with artificial models equipped with GPS modules to reconstruct their drift movement at sea. After collecting the experimental data, they will be evaluated for capture and recapture rates and their potential in modeling the drift from the release site to the beach stranding location and from the carcass encounter location to the possible capture site using hydrodynamic modeling. This approach will provide a better interpretation of mortality data regarding the conservation status of the species in the Franciscana Management Area II. Show less
