Research and Development Project Manager
-
Jan 2016 - Jan 2018
My focus shifted now to full time management of the R&D team in the U.S. that I had been working on since the end of 2014. Responsibilities included regular customer visits to present data and align on the direction of the research, and then planning resources and schedules to meet the customers needs.

Research Scientist (U.S.) & Senior Lab Manager (China)
-
Oct 2014 - Jan 2016
Relocating back to the U.S., my job responsibilities were divided between countries. The fast paced research team in the U.S. focused on finding chemistry solutions for the microchip electroplating process. My role included conducting electrochemical research, creating and delivering technical presentations to customers, and troubleshooting issues at the customer site. Meanwhile, I continued to make regular visits to the two facilities in China, overseeing the labs in each of those facilities.

Laboratory Manager (China Facility - MLDCI)
-
Aug 2009 - Oct 2014
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS:* Established and ran high-purity liquid chemical labs in two separate locations in China (Dalian and Xi'an) for the analysis of process chemicals used in the semiconductor industry. * Managed lab teams in both locations, in Chinese, and intercultural environment. * Implemented maintenance procedures and protocol for management of UPW Pure Water System. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Dalian project was the first facility MLI built in China. I came onboard with no semiconductor experience, but rather a proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin), a degree in chemistry, and a “can-do” attitude. We ran into multiple obstacles, but through sheer perseverance, and some good collaborations, overcame each one. The second project, which entailed building a new facility in the heart of China, Xi'an (home to the Terra Cotta soldiers and unified China's first dynasty), things were different. Our team had grown in experience and knew how to get things done. We were up and running in a fraction of the time it took to establish the facility in Dalian. We had successfully grown into a strong and flexible cross-cultural team. Show less

Taught chemistry and physics to 8th and 10th grade IB (International Baccalaureate) students in the Dalian branch of the Beijing World Youth Academy. Housed in the heart of a Chinese middle school, the IB program had established a nucleus of a school for expats. Did I have teaching credentials? No. But I was willing to go through training and had a strong dedicated attitude to make it work. As with many situations in China, where there is a will there is usually a way. Teacher/Owner

Aug 2006 - Jul 2008
Obtained Chinese business license for a Wholly Foreign-Owned Enterprise and built a 100 student English training center in southwest China. The experience here really developed my skill of figuring out how to get things done in an ambiguous environment. With not-so-good Chinese skills (at the time), I navigated through an abundant amount of government bureaucratic paperwork and interviews in order to get our business license. I advertised for the school (literally on the street, passing out flyers and talking it up), and also had to negotiate with folks on the tuition and courses being offered. Honestly it was probably the most effective way I advanced my Chinese skills beyond the elementary level. Show less

Lab technician in a biochemical research lab engaged in understanding mechanisms of gene silencing -- a system that is hijacked in a Cancer cell. See published papers attached below. Experience: Two key experiences stayed with me from this job. (1) being involved in the research and publication process for the first time, and (2) moving a lab. During the last months on the job I helped move the lab from Portland Oregon (OHSU) to Madison Wisconsin (UW), staying on in Madison for an additional 2 months to ensure things were setup, and to finish up the body of research I had started. It was a good experience in the benefit of sticking through with a project to the end, and really helping out when things went above and beyond the original job expectation. Show less

Bike Shop Mechanic
-
Jun 1986 - Jul 1991
The bike shop: this is where I grew up. My dad was the owner, and I was always around, putting things together, taking things apart. Spent a lot of my free time here. In '86 I was finally hired on officially after giving up my paper route. I really enjoyed working on bikes, but also liked meeting and helping every type of folk who happened to come in. Looking back, this experience was equally, if not more, as important as school itself. At the shop I learned firsthand the value of being totally honest with customers. I saw how people wanted to know the straight answer, and not just a good sales pitch. Values like hard work, integrity and teamwork were simply part of the job. I remember once (years later in a job interview) I was asked what I did at the bike shop, and I simply replied "I just did whatever needed doing." And my future boss replied, "well, that's just the kind of person we need." Show less
