Research: Determine whether the U.S. maternal mortality rate correlates with temperature and pollution, and whether this correlation is stronger for black women. Data: Using R to statistically analyze maternal mortality data from early 20th century to the present

    • Food Justice and Basic Needs - Sustainability Action Research
      • Sep 2018 - Jun 2019

The Food Justice and Basic Needs team falls under the larger umbrella of Sustainability Action Research (SAR) within UCLA IoES. Our team's mission throughout our project was to better understand how we can improve campus awareness and use of campus basic needs resources to those in need. There are an abundant amount of resources at UCLA, but many of these are underutilized. - Project Goals: We wanted to understand if underutilization of resources was due to a lack of knowledge or if there were other barriers restricting students from using them. We also wanted to explore if this gap in availability and usage could be attributable to the fact that there was inadequate information and communication regarding these resources. - Project Objectives: Our team created a microwave map of all the locations of microwaves on campus to encourage home-cooked meals. We also distributed a survey and conducted focus groups to retrieve qualitative and quantitative data in regard to understanding student needs and how they use resources. Finally, our group created a new design for the UCLA Basic Needs website - a site that could be more user-friendly, visually appealing, and functional. Show less

The UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) partnered with the NRDC to analyze the potential impact on public health due to diesel emissions exposure (specifically particulate matter and nitrogen oxides) to residents near the port of Los Angeles. Our team of six IoES seniors worked closely with David Pettit, a senior attorney at NRDC, to develop a year-long capstone project. - Purpose: Communities living in proximity to diesel hotspots — such as ports, rail yards, distribution centers and freight roadways — disproportionately bear the negative health impacts associated with diesel exhaust. These are also usually low-income communities populated by historically marginalized and underrepresented groups. - Goals: Gather air quality data, infer air quality at locations without data via dispersal modeling, and develop an accessible visual representation of hyperlocal air pollution levels around the port. - Data Collection: Each team member conducted literature reviews on the subject. Moreover, we collected field data in Wilmington, CA using an air quality sensor and sourced data from public sources online for use in AERMOD (modeling software). - Analysis: AERMOD is a Gaussian steady state plume air dispersion model in which the results are time-independent. AERMOD allowed us to generate predictions of the dispersion of PM2.5 and NOx within the atmosphere based on a specific point in time. Using input data such as wind speeds, temperatures, and emission factors, AERMOD calculated the spatial distribution of a pollutant at a given source. The IQAir, a portable air quality sensor, was also used to gather field data. Show less
