  I spent a gap year between school and university teaching English in a Cultura Inglesa, a private English school, in Uberaba, Minas Gerais. In order to gain a place on the programme I had to successfully complete a tough skills assessment course carried out on the Isle of Coll, which itself followed a competitive application process. I then had to raise £2,000 through fundraising in order to secure that place. I lived with a host Brazilian family and supplemented my 'income' by assisting in various charitable projects. I taught myself portuguese and became fluent orally within three months, although it's a little rusty now!
