      Toronto Zoo is the largest zoological park in Canada with a collection excess of 5000 animals of which the fishes collection is one quarter of the total. Being apart of the Toronto Zoo Great Lakes Program team included tasks to continue a field conservation project for freshwater mussel population studies in numerous watersheds in Southern Ontario. Duties included; assisting with daily field surveys using quadrant search approach for freshwater mussels, assessing and collecting data on site water quality (factors including dissolved oxygen, pH, water temperature, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, phosphorous and turbidity), collecting basic site data (time and date, weather, current temperature, surrounding vegetation communities, and notes about present aquatic life), as well as quadrant data (canopy cover, depth, substrate, noting presence of algae and/or macrophytes), and finally identifying any found freshwater mussels species on site and recording data on shell condition, shell description, height, width, length and photographing said species. In addition to assisting with ‘I am Important! I am Protected’ public awareness campaign initiatives by answering any questions the public might have when coming across a site visit. Many other tasks giving included keeping the Toronto Zoo's freshwater mussels database up to date, organizing and naming photos taken at each site, compiling photographs to receive additional conformation of identified species, as well as updating maps on ArcGIS and AutoCAD, and following procedures to clean equipment after each completed watershed location to avoid contamination/ further invasion of invasive species (spiny water flea, Eurasian water milfoil).
