•While writing my dissertation about the various roles that city managers play in the governance of the municipality, I was provided the opportunity to shadow the city manager in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the intricacies of being a city manager. •Developed a draft set of performance measures for each operation within the city. •Studied municipal public policy making by attending every City Council meeting, and talking with senior local government managers about the development and administration of many of the primary public policy issues that arose during my internship; •Studied the development and coordination of administrative policies by attending every weekly senior management meeting where there was an interface between the city manager and all senior staff. I would then follow up with senior managers if I had more questions about what was all involved in a particular administrative decision; •Initiated lots of discussions with senior administrators about their professional development, their management styles, evolving trends within their professions and what they expect out of their employees.
