Oversaw facilitation of fish migratory routes along the Millstone and Raritan rivers in the Stonybrook Watershed under supervision of Steve Tuorto and Jim Waltman. Through both research and advocacy, pushed for the removal or modification of dams to protect populations of American shad, a migratory species of herring native to New Jersey. As part of Project HummerFlowerWatch, analyzed image data of Rocky Mountain hummingbirds to gain a better understanding of hummingbird feeding habits, visual ecology, and migration patterns, as well as the effects of climate change on the flowering plants that hummingbirds depend on. Our current research team, composed of a handful of interested and dedicated undergraduates, graduate students, and led by Dr. Mary Stoddard, investigated which flower species hummingbirds favor over others, and whether hummingbird migratory patterns are shifting with changing temperatures in the region. Identified and samples microfossils (foraminifera) in sediment cores from the North Atlantic Ocean seafloor to extract isotopic nitrogen. This data is used to examine trends in climate, temperature, and nutrient cycles since the last glacial period.I worked with Jesse Farmer, a graduate student in the geosciences department, and Daniel Sigman, a professor in the geosciences department, over the summer.

Processed collected samples of Fucus rockweed from five Alaskan watershed sites for analysis of water, lipid, and protein content as well as component elements and carbon-nitrogen ratios. The overall objective of this project was to determine the association between glacial discharge and the function of coastal ecosystems, with a focus on the primary trophic level. In addition, assisted with EPSCoR fieldwork in the Kachemak Bay, participated in seine netting for fish collection, identification, and release as well as measured biomass from intertidal quadrats. Work took place under the guidance of Dr. Katrin Iken and Dr. Brenda Konar at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the Kasitsna Bay Laboratory. This research experience was part of my senior thesis work, which continues into May 2023. Show less
