Over the past two years I have worked in the monetary policy department at the Bank of Canada. During my tenure at the Bank, I have written and contributed to a number of policy notes on topics related to Canada’s potential output, structural issues, and the labour market more broadly. One example of this work is my contribution to the Bank’s annual assessment of potential output, and the output gap, for both 2013 and 2014. Specifically, I supplied projections of trend labour input, which accounted for a number of diverse labour-market factors including demographic change, the long-term effects of negative wealth shocks, and labour shortages. Each of these topics was covered in a separate note, which I either wrote independently or as part of a group. With respect to my work on structural issues, my recent note on dual labour markets (low and high wage/skills) deserves mention, as does my work answering questions posed by senior management and external stakeholders on topics related to inequality and education. I have also had the opportunity to write on issues related to the labour market more broadly. For instance I produced a note that analyses the implications of a declining unionization rate on the inflation process in Canada, summarizing the works on Canadian Phillips curve, and I am currently writing a piece on the sectorial mobility of Canadian workers in response to oil-price developments, using restricted-access micro-level data (Census-LWF). Throughout my policy work experience, I have improved my ability to communicate both orally and in writing, and continue to do so. I have also expanded my research interests.
