Duties: Covering all surgical departments including the wards, ED, OR, ICU andthe Surgery clinic.ED: Supervising Junior Registrars in the department, assisting them in difficultprocedures and providing consultations to the other specialties in the departmentshould they need assistance in the form of a procedure or a surgical opinion. Inaddition to that, I would see the most critical of patients first hand and alladmissions and discharges need to be signed off by me.OR: In the theatre I'd perform regular general surgery operations withoutassistance and with minimal or no supervision especially while on call where theconsultant is out of the hospital and I'd be the most senior In-house surgeon. Theseinclude Hernias, Lap Cholecystectomies, Limb amputations, Appendectomies bothopen and Laparoscopic and Emergency Lapratomies while on call. In addition toperforming higher-level operations with the consultant scrubbed-in to superviseand assist me. I'm also responsible for supervising and assisting junior registrars inperforming operations suitable to their level of practice.Consultant Surgery Clinic: I usually cover it alone or with the consultant presentseeing patients referred to us from the Junior Registrar Clinic after being fullyinvestigated where we make final decisions on patients and order their admissionsand operation to be carried out and when.Wards and ICU: I usually do the morning and evening round, with or without theconsultant, after the junior registrar finish their round and write their follow-upswhere we make decisions on whether patients are to be discharged, taken to theatre,or we change their course of treatment and we also explain complex procedures topatients and their families and gain their consent. I also coordinate with otherdepartment consultants the transfer of patients to their care or for a particularprocedure after which the patient is returned to our team's care. Show less

Duties: Covering all surgical departments including the wards, ED, OR, ICU and the Surgery clinic.ED: Receiving acute trauma patients doing the primary survey, dealing with any life threatening injuries they might have, completing their workup, organizing their admission or transfer according to their condition and the types of injuries they might have. I'm also in charge of management of any other surgical patient. On an average shift I'd see 20-30 surgical patients and at least 2-3 major traumas (MVAs and Falling downs).OR: In the theatre I'd perform a range of operations including large lipomas excision, suturing large and complicated Lacerations especially if the patient is irritable as well as performing open appendectomies, Abscesses incision and drainage and Diabetic foot debridement and minor amputations. I'm also the primary assistant on major surgeries including colorectal, thyroid, breast and hepatobiliary operations both open and Laparoscopic..Surgery Clinic: I'd be the first to see the surgical patient in the clinic where I'd perform a full assessment, order appropriate investigation and come up with a working diagnosis before admission or transfer to the respective specialist surgery clinic seeing that we cover all minor surgery specialities apart from Orthopaedics Wards and ICU: Admissions, Discharges, minor bedside procedure and planning discharge plans.
