Independent Newspapers has eight strong regional titles in KZN - The Mercury, Daily News, Sunday Tribune, POST, Independent on Saturday, Isolezwe, Isolezwe ngeSonto and Isolezwe ngoMgqibelo. I managed the region's Trade Marketing, the objective of which is to maximise advertising revenues. Extensive use was made of syndicated as well as commissioned studies. Insights were then translated into persuasive and appealing formats for selling the audiences. Research was a major part of my portfolio and ad hoc surveys were commissioned to solve business issues across all aspects of the organisation including editorial, circulation, and advertising. As a one-person department, I managed budgets, suppliers and internal processes. A highlight of my time at Independent was the launch of the two weekend editions of Isolezwe - the Zulu language newspaper phenomenon which continues to grow. With little scope for growth, especially in digital, I left Independent for new challenges. Show less

At KZN's "Home of the Hits," I was part of a dynamic marketing team. My area of responsibility was Trade Marketing which involved client events, listenership (RAMS) presentations, newsletters, and client promotions. The 'buzz' of radio was an eye-opener for me and it was great fun working with all those extroverts! At KZN's "Home of the Hits," I was part of a dynamic marketing team. I worked full-time as a contract lecturer in the Centre for Cultural and Media Studies. I developed a course in Understanding Audiences for second-year students which drew heavily on my experience as a media planner/buyer as well as my academic knowledge. Supervising Honours students and lecturing a DTP and first year communications course kept me busy. I worked full-time as a contract lecturer in the Centre for Cultural and Media Studies.
