2nd Grade Resident Teacher

Aug 2019 - Dec 2019
As a resident teacher in a 2nd grade classroom, I worked alongside my cooperating teacher, supporting students in a variety of content areas. I supported students in math, reading, writing, expeditionary learning and social-emotional growth. I planned and conducted activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provided students with opportunities to observe, question, investigate and make sense of a variety of content areas. As a co-teacher in the Sequoia classroom, I spent every day working with 3.5-5 year olds, helping them to better understand the world and supporting their own ideas through emergent curriculum. We plan our curriculum and explorations off of the students questions and interests, meaning every day is a little different. Our main focus is social emotional learning; we work through conflict resolution, building empathy for others and having agency for oneselves. As teachers, we are participant observers; we spend a lot of time observing the children and picking up on social cues or interests from how they interact with peers, their teachers or themselves. I was responsible for the age-appropriate coaching and supervision to patients and families while hospitalized on the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. Working within the context of a therapeutic milieu at Seattle Children’s Hospital, I drew on principles of behavioral and cognitive-behavioral theory to teach youth, aged 4 to 18, skills related to emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and social problem solving. As problem behavior arose within the milieu, I focused on understanding the function of the behavior to guide my interventions in the moment and coach youth to use one of a number of coping skills that they have been taught in therapeutic groups and sessions.
