During my 9th semester in Global Refugee Studies, I did a three month internship at a local NGO that helps women, children and teenagers at the slum areas. In this organisaton I was an project leader that among other things was involved in the capacity building of the local staff, developed the Soap4Hope Women´s corporative, taught english, arranged games, established an NGO reference book and established a rooftopgarden for educational purposes and to enhance food security, this enabled the women and children to learn about growing vegetables that later can be planted, harvested and eaten at the slum areas. During this project I was a part of everything from fundraising and designing the space to arranging the garden as well as the practical teaching about farming. Throughout this internship, I have acquired a lot of knowledge and skills regarding humanitarian and developmental work, project management, communication as well as the interplay between theory and practice, since I was a part of the daily operations at The Way Station from the strategic to the operational level. In 2016 I did a 10-week internship at the New Hope Local Myanmar in Yangon, Myanmar, an NGO that partners with the non-profit organization Mercy Outreach Denmark (MOD). During this internship I was part of a team that taught English for children in the Dallah slum area and for former prostitutes, delivered nutritious food to poor families, established a community center and safe playgrounds, and established safety plans and first aid kits for employees in case of natural disasters. During this internship, I acquired a lot of practical knowledge regarding development within a South Asian country, gaining an understanding of the culture as well as their specific challenges, including internally displaced persons, refugees, urbanization, and migration. I established travel safety plans for the students and employees, established surveillance, reviewed action cards, conducted risk analysis and preparedness plans, established an online preparedness portal for the employees, and arranged evacuation drills at the university’s locations in Copenhagen.
