Summer Researcher

Jun 2021 - Sep 2021
The purpose of this research was to examine the degree to which medical professionals exhibited racial bias in their assessments of hypothetical adolescents’ pain to understand bias as it pertains to pain recognition or pain perception. This project was started during an independent study and data was collected and coded. The paper was written during the Pitzer College Summer Internship of 2021. I completed background research and a literature review to compile information to support or negate the questions we were examining. I recruited medical providers from a members only listserv for the Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM). With help from the coordination of the executive director, this study was also posted on the SAHM website. As well, I co-wrote the research article, proofed the data for coding in R, and edited tables for the article for publishing. Show less

As an EMT, I interacted with hospital staff and the public to be able to obtain pertinent patient information while maintaining confidentiality. I was able to calm and reassure patients and family members to enable the accurate gathering of vital medical information to aid in care decisions. When treating patients, I rapidly assessed and skillfully provided care to patients suffering from chronic and acute life-threatening medical conditions. Depending on the shift, I sometimes worked alongside RNs to provide critical care transport for patients in severe conditions, such as COVID patients being transported between hospitals for ECMO. On BLS calls, I was required to communicate between the hospital and SNFs and vice versa to ensure adequate patient care, safety, and efficient transportation. I also had many hospice calls in which patients needed to be brought into their homes for end-of-life care. This required creativity to get the bed-bound patients from the gurney, into their homes, and into their beds. I worked closely with nurses to get patients’ medical and personal information to ensure safe transport. I was also an ambulance driver who was responsible for making sure the rig was in working order and transporting the patient quickly and safely. I obtained over 377 patient contact hours and worked 18% ALS, 20% CCT, and 62% BLS calls. Show less
