Rebuilding trust after traumatic experiences of civil war and devastating violent conflicts in the region, the idea of the 'Women's Situation Room' (WSR) was born out of urgent necessity in preparation for peaceful presidential elections in Liberia in 2011. A women- and youth-led approach to mitigating, reducing and managing violence during the electoral cycle, including conflict management in the post-election period, a WSR contributes to peaceful, secure and more inclusive elections through real-time interventions at all social, political and security sector levels in the respective country where the WSR is implemented. This research project studied the WSR as a case for current and future entry points to engage youth gang leaders in the prevention of violent conflict during election periods. The project was threefold: Firstly, the notions and definitions of “youth”, “gangs” and “youth gang” were analysed and identified for the purpose of this project. The triggers, the “codes of conduct”, the cultures and the evolution of the gangs in Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone were analysed. Secondly, it compared and analysed recent WSR initiatives undertaken to engage gangs in the stabilisation of peace and security in Liberia, Ghana and Sierra Leone. Thirdly, it formulated recommendations from past WSRs in Africa for their potential future application as a tool to engage youth gang leaders in the prevention of conflict in West Africa.
